Behind the LD
Lauren Kennedi Ozie Dixon
Lauren Kennedi Ozie Dixon is a 2021 Spelman College graduate, where she created an independent major studying Innovative Design for Production and Live Events, with a concentration in Lighting Design and a minor in educational studies.
In preparation for her career, she has created opportunities to hone her production and lighting skills by applying her expertise in theatre productions, fashion shows, student productions, and homecoming concerts as well as opportunities in greater Atlanta. She worked diligently to secure the first Apprenticeship with BlackLight Productions, Inc., and completed eight months of a two-year program before COVID-19 took effect. In 2018 She started her own freelance lighting design and consulting company KnockOut Designs and in 2023, KnockOut Designs transitioned to KaLeiDoscope Designs.
She served as one of three interns in the highly selective Alliance Theatre Spelman Leadership Program. This internship is designed to prepare students to succeed in a competitive job market for theater and production. Through this one-year paid opportunity, she has regular access to mentorship opportunities and career readiness training and could tailor her experience to her interests.
Lauren has expanded her knowledge of lighting design through several varying experiences. She participated in an immersive lighting internship in Shanghai, China in 2019, and has worked as a designer for the Atlanta University Center and the Atlanta community with their pageants, fashion shows, and theater productions. In 2023 Lauren was introduced to the world of Live TV and Production through varying Variety Shows and Awards shows and has fallen in love with this next level of the lighting industry.
Lauren is pursuing an MFA in Lighting Design at the California Institute of the Arts and continues to explore the vast field of lighting in her career. This exploration includes immersive experiences, music and television. Lauren had worked on the Lighting Teams for Variety Live TV specials and Award shows including America’s Got Talent, the BET Awards, the Emmys, and the Oscars. Most recently Lauren served as the Associate LD for the 2024 Lucky Daye Tour.
Lauren is a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and an advocate for serving her community, specifically through Theater education. She is tenacious, focused, and detail-oriented and strives to “Light the Way” for aspiring Black Women Designers everywhere.
